What is Celestia?

Celestia is a modular blockchain that does one thing: data availability. Traditional blockchains like Ethereum bundle execution, consensus, and data availability into a single layer — a monolithic design that creates scaling bottlenecks. Celestia separates these concerns, specializing exclusively in ordering transactions and making the underlying data available to anyone who needs to verify it.

The core technical innovation is data availability sampling (DAS): light nodes can verify that block data has been published without downloading the full block, by sampling small random chunks. This allows Celestia to scale throughput with the number of light nodes on the network — a fundamentally different scaling model from adding validators.

For developers, the pitch is direct: deploy a rollup using Celestia as your data availability layer and avoid bootstrapping your own validator set. Pay for blockspace in TIA. Projects including Manta Network, Dymension's RollApp ecosystem, and Eclipse (Solana VM on Ethereum) already use Celestia for DA.

TIA was launched via mainnet airdrop in October 2023, with a starting supply of 1 billion tokens and an inflationary staking reward model. A 2025 governance proposal aims to slash issuance from ~5% annually down to as low as 0.25% under the new Proof of Growth model. A January 2026 announcement introduced Fibre — a parallel protocol targeting 1 terabit per second of dedicated blockspace.

TIA on Hyperliquid

TIA is a high-beta, narrative-driven perpetual on Hyperliquid. It tends to attract traders who are taking directional bets on the modular blockchain thesis rather than the broader altcoin market, and smart money positioning on TIA is often the clearest signal of how institutional-adjacent wallets feel about the Ethereum scaling roadmap.

Volatility on TIA is among the highest in this group. The coin peaked in early 2024, sold off sharply through the modular narrative reset of late 2025, and entered 2026 in recovery mode. This creates a setup where smart money positioning is bifurcated: some wallets are accumulating on the dip with a 12-18 month horizon, while others are using the overhead supply to short bounces.

Funding rates on TIA tend to stay negative or neutral during bear phases and spike positive sharply during any macro crypto rally, reflecting the asset's high-beta nature. Watch for consistent accumulation in open interest — sustained OI growth without a corresponding price move is a classic smart money pre-positioning signal.

Outlook

Celestia's fundamental adoption is growing: real projects are using it as a DA layer and paying TIA fees. The network usage has increased even as the price declined through 2025, which is the kind of price-value gap that historically precedes a re-rating.

The bull case: The Proof of Growth issuance reduction (to as low as 0.25%) dramatically improves token economics. Fibre brings massive throughput capacity. As rollup deployment accelerates through 2026, TIA fee demand grows structurally. A recovery in the modular narrative — likely tied to Ethereum's own scaling milestones — would re-rate the entire sector.

The bear case: EigenDA and Avail are real competitors offering data availability with different security trade-offs. Ethereum's native blob transactions remain the default for many rollups and benefit from Ethereum's validator set without requiring a separate token. If major rollups do not migrate to Celestia or increase blob usage, fee demand stagnates. Ongoing token inflation pressures price through the unlock schedule.

Net: clear first-mover in modular DA, genuine usage, but competition risk from EigenDA and Ethereum blobs is non-trivial and should not be dismissed.
